WHAT IS MOUNTAINEERS TRAVEL BASEBALL?

The Somerset Hills Mountaineers Travel Baseball Program values healthy, but advanced competition in a team first environment that’s led by committed coaching staffs who are looking to maximize skills development for all of our players.  Travel baseball is an overall more competitive brand of baseball than Spring recreation baseball and our Mountaineers teams play against teams from other towns and clubs in area leagues during the Spring and Summer seasons as well as in Summer Cal Ripken District League Play.  Additionally, coaches at different age groups may enter their teams in tournaments both locally or outside of our area.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The Mountaineers travel baseball program is open to residents of (or students enrolled at a school in) Bernardsville, Bedminster and Peapack-Gladstone.  Players must participate in our Somerset Hills Ball Club Spring league in order to be eligible for our 2026 travel baseball teams.

As a chartered member of Babe Ruth League, Somerset Hills Ball Club’s Mountaineers Travel Program follows the May 1st – April 30th age groupings that, for the 2026 season, are explained in the Baseball Age Birth Chart are included below:

WINTER TRAINING

The Winter months are a critical time for our teams to build camaraderie and culture and to work on some important aspects of their game such as batting, throwing, pitching, catching, strength and speed.  Players that are selected following tryouts will be asked to join our Winter Training sessions that will be lead by our Mountaineers Coaches and other outside instructors.

SPRING TRAVEL BASEBALL

During the Spring season, our Mountaineers teams will practice and play league games based on a schedule that is built around our regular SHBC Spring Recreational Season.  All of our Mountaineers players must participate in our SHBC Spring recreational league.  Travel games are typically, but not exclusively played on Sundays during the Spring Season.  Coaches may also supplement the Spring regular season with tournaments.

SUMMER TRAVEL BASEBALL

The Summer season will typically consist of our teams participating in our Babe Ruth League’s “Cal Ripken” District tournament early in the Summer and then either league or tournament play through the month of July.  Coaches may also add local tournaments to their Summer schedule and our older Mountaineers teams will typically play in an out of state tournaments in Aberdeen, MD or Coopertown, NY.

FALL TRAVEL BASEBALL – This is at each coach’s  discretion as some teams have played a limited Fall schedule in the past while others have taken the Fall off entirely.  There would be flexibility for players that are selected to our teams to opt out of playing in the Fall if their team were to play.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE TRYOUT

  • Glove
  • Bat
  • Helmet
  • Cleats
  • Water

WHAT NOT TO BRING TO THE TRYOUT – As we will have independent evaluators, we ask that players on past Mountaineers teams not wear Mountaineer apparel (hats, shirts, etc) to tryouts.  Mountaineers bags and helmet stickers are fine.

TRYOUT & SELECTION PROCESS

Players’ hitting, fielding, throwing and baserunning skills will be impartially evaluated by evaluators and coaches from a different age groups.  Coaches from a player’s age group may facilitate the tryout, but will not evaluate players.  Players will be selected based on evaluation scores, team needs and coaching input regarding the player’s performance in previous seasons, anticipated commitment level, etc.  Additional tryout sessions may be held before the season, if necessary.
